School of Education X
Middle School Education
Middle schools students (grades 5-9) are an exciting, energetic bundle of fun. Become a middle school teacher and share the enthusiasm. At Avila you can prepare for middle school teaching in the areas of Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, Mathematics, Business or Speech/Theater. You will have many clinical opportunities which culminate in student teaching. The curriculum is a combination of education courses to prepare you to teach and content courses for the subject area.

Elementary Education
Elementary teachers influence children for the rest of their lives. If you want to be one of those memorable teachers, come to Avila. Our teacher preparation program is respected by principals and superintendents from all around the region. Our program gets you in the classroom with the children from the very beginning. You will be prepared to teach all children and teach them well. Our elementary program prepares teacher for grades 1-6 in Missouri. We have a reciprocal relationship with Kansas for certification in grades K-6).



School of Education X
Special Education
Avila has a unique program to prepare you to work with children with mild to moderate special needs in the areas of learning disabilities, behavior disorders, mentally handicapped and physical and other impairments. This five year program leads to certification in both elementary education (grades 1-6) and in special education (grades K-12). Our graduates have a 100% employment rate.

Secondary Education
Are you interested in teaching in grades 9-12? Avila has many different areas of certification to prepare you to influence the lives of teenagers and make a difference in their futures. Avila offers certification in the following areas of high school teaching: Art (grades 9-12 or K-12), Biology, Business Education, English, Mathematics Education, Social Science, Speech/Theater, and Vocal Music (grades K-12). You will have many opportunities to work in the schools before you begin your student teaching. Avila graduates get jobs. Come and learn more about our programs.



School of Visual & Communication Arts X
Art
Avila offers three concentration areas in art: graphic design, art education, and art therapy. Avila's graphic design major prepares you for professional practice. In the last 10 years, over ninety percent of our graduates have found employment in the design field. Art education graduates are certified to teach at the primary and secondary level in Missouri and Kansas. The art therapy curriculum meets recommendations of the American Art Therapy Association. Students display their work at the yearly Senior Show in Avila’s Thornhill Art Gallery.



School of Visual & Communication Arts X
Communication
The advertising/public relations concentration prepares you for a successful career in advertising, copywriting, public relations, sales, event planning or sports marketing. The film & digital media concentration prepares you for a successful career in independent digital video and film production, studio recording, screenwriting and corporate scriptwriting. Both concentrations are reality-based curricula which allows students to apply theoretical knowledge to hands-on production projects, such as working with Kansas City Chiefs offensive lineman Will Shields on his promotional video for the Will Shields Foundation or being a part of the award-winning “Talon” newspaper staff.
