Distinctive Housing in Lakeview Chicago
East, along the Lake, you will
find high
rises with many one- and two-bedroom
condos,
Victorian greystones, large single-family
houses and lavish mansions, many
that date
back to the 1800s. Going west,
you will find
many rehabbed vintage apartments/condos,
two- and three- unit buildings,
multi-unit
condo buildings, storefront conversions,
lofts and single-family homes.
Wrigleyville has many of rehabbed
Victorian
greystones, two- and three-flat
buildings
and condominiums. One notable
Wrigleyville
street is Alta Vista Terrace,
with beautiful
row houses that resemble an old
English town.
Background and History of Lakeview
Lake View was used as a camp
and trail path
for the Miami, Ottawa, and Winnebago
Native
American tribes. Conrad Sulzer
of Winterthur,
Zürich, Switzerland was the first
white settler
to live in the area in 1837.
In 1853, one
of the first permanent structures
was built
by James Rees and Elisha Hundley
on the corner
of present-day Byron Street at
Lake Shore
Drive and was called the Hotel
Lake View,
named for the hotel's unobstructed
view of
the shores of Lake Michigan.
It gained what
was characterized as a resort
atmosphere.
The early settlement continued
to grow, especially
due to increased immigration
of farming families
from Germany, Luxembourg and
Sweden. Lake
View experienced a population
boom as Chicago
suffered a deadly and devastating
cholera
outbreak. The Hotel Lake View
served as refuge
for many Chicagoans but became
filled to
capacity. Homestead lands were
sold and housing
was built. Access to the new
community was
served by a wooden plank road
connected to
the Fullerton Parkway called
Lake View Plank
Road, present-day Broadway. With
infrastructure
and growing population, residents
realized
it was time to organize formal
governance
to provide essential public services.

Background and History of Lincoln
Park
The area now known as Lincoln
Park in Chicago
was still primarily forest with
stretches
of grassland and occasional quicksand,
and
was virtually untouched by Europeans
as late
as the 1820s.
In 1824 the United States Army
built a small
post near today's Clybourn and
Armitage Avenues.
Indian settlements existed along
Green Bay
Trail, now called Clark Street
(named after
explorer George Rogers Clark),
at the current
intersection of Halsted Street
and Fullerton
Avenue.
In 1836, land from North to Fullerton
and
from the lake to Halsted was
inexpensive
because the area was considered
remote. Therefore,
a small pox hospital and the
city cemetery
were located in Lincoln Park
until the 1860s.
In 1837 Chicago was incorporated
as a city,
and North Avenue was established
as its northern
boundary. Settlements increased
along Green
Bay Trail when the government
offered land
claims and Green Bay Road was
widened
