Distinctive Housing in Edgewater Chicago
It was built in the 1920's to the prestige
and elite as summer homes. The area underwent
several rounds of new construction along
the lakefront and on major streets, leaving
mixed housing with high-rises, condominiums,
mid-rise multi-units and single-family homes.
Within its borders are many smaller neighborhoods
and homes like those found in Andersonville
with its clean-swept, two-flat buildings.
Lakewood-Balmoral is a leafy neighborhood
of single-family homes and two-flats. And
Edgewater Glen is a neighborhood with brick
and frame single-family homes. To the east
is Edgewater Beach, whose streets are lined
with condominiums that overlook Lake Michigan.
Background and History of Edgewater
In 1885, Edgewater was given its name by
its builder, John Lewis Cochran. He built
the first residential subdivision in the
area. After a few years, Edgewater was celebrated
as a wonder as it became "the only electric
lighted suburb adjacent to Chicago".
In the early 1900s, Edgewater was regarded
as one of Chicago's most prestigious communities.
A prominent symbol of Edgewater's affluence
was the Edgewater Beach Hotel, which opened
in 1916 at 5349 North Sheridan. The famed
pink hotel was demolished in 1968, though
the remaining pink Edgewater Beach Apartments
building is still a landmark at the north
tip of Lake Shore Drive. The Edgewater building
boom peaked in 1926 and property values reached
their height in 1928. The burgeoning affluent
population grew so much that developers expanded
Edgewater and renamed the new neighborhood
community Uptown.

Background and History of Lincoln
Park
The area now known as Lincoln
Park in Chicago
was still primarily forest with
stretches
of grassland and occasional quicksand,
and
was virtually untouched by Europeans
as late
as the 1820s.
In 1824 the United States Army
built a small
post near today's Clybourn and
Armitage Avenues.
Indian settlements existed along
Green Bay
Trail, now called Clark Street
(named after
explorer George Rogers Clark),
at the current
intersection of Halsted Street
and Fullerton
Avenue.
In 1836, land from North to Fullerton
and
from the lake to Halsted was
inexpensive
because the area was considered
remote. Therefore,
a small pox hospital and the
city cemetery
were located in Lincoln Park
until the 1860s.
In 1837 Chicago was incorporated
as a city,
and North Avenue was established
as its northern
boundary. Settlements increased
along Green
Bay Trail when the government
offered land
claims and Green Bay Road was
widened
